Check Your Trade Name Availability

Before you file! You are responsible for checking the availability of your chosen Trade Name.
If the Trade Name you choose is already registered, it cannot be filed. If you file without confirming the availability and the name is already registered, you will have to file a new Trade Name Application and pay a new application fee to register another Trade Name. There is no refund for duplicate name filings.

Search Instructions:

• Go to the Portal Website to search for Trade Name - click here for Portal Smart Search
  • If you register, you will not have to do the CAPTCHA with every search
  • If you choose to register, make sure to select 'Public Access with Documents' as your role, after you login for the first time
• Select Smart Search 
• Type in Trade Name (see examples below on best search practices)
• If you do not create an account, you will need to check the "I'm not a robot" CAPTCHA box
  • If you do create an account, you should only have to do this once
• Click the "Advanced Filtering Options" dropdown
• Click the "Filter by Location" dropdown
• Select "Tradename"
• Click "Submit"
• If the Trade Name appears, you can click for more details
• If not found, you might need to be creative with how to seach (see below)

Helpful Search Tips: When searching for Trade Names, you can use an asterisk (*) to expand your search. For example, if searching for 'Deutz Tractor Corporation', you will not find that name.  It is listed in the system as 'Deutz Tractor Corp'.  If you use the asterisk and search for 'Deutz Tractor*', you will then see the name.

Also when searching, you might need to try different variations of the name. For example, our system shows 'J P M Enterprises Inc' with spaces between the J P M.  If you were to search for this business and type the name as 'JPM Enterprises Inc', the case would not pull up. Creative searching may be needed for names that could be recorded in different ways.

It is possible your Trade Name might show up as a different type of case (this happens for some older Trade Names).  Review the list below - it might show up as one of these case types.

TN - Trade Name Registration

TA - Trade Name Amendment

TC - Trade Name Cancellation

CH - Charter or Conversion Charter

LP - Limited Partnership/Amended Limited Partnership

LC - Limited Partnership Cancellation

GP - General Partnership/Amended Partnership

GC - General Partnership Cancellation

Trade Name cases might show with various prefixes.  They can be listed as Trade Names, Charters, Limited Partnerships, and General Partnerships.  These may show as the following:  1989TN*, 1989TA*, 1989TC*, 1989CH*, 1989LP*, 1989LC*, 1989GP*, and 1989GC*.
